The City of Columbia’s Comprehensive Sewer Review

The City of Columbia’s Comprehensive Sewer Review

The City of Columbia’s Capacity Assurance Program (CAP) is a program that reviews all new sewer service connections and increased wastewater flow. This review follows specific criteria to determine if the City’s wastewater system has sufficient capacity to accept new connections and increased flows. The CAP is a part of the Columbia’s comprehensive program to reduce and prevent sanitary sewer overflows. The City is required to implement a CAP that meets federal and state approval. As part of its Capital Improvement Program, the City regularly identifies projects that could improve sewer capacity. Columbia has completed numerous projects that have avoided many capacity limitations within the system, including upgrading all of its major sewer pump stations, rehabilitating a major sewer outfall, and upgrading capacity at the wastewater treatment plant. In recent years, Columbia has been dedicated to rehabilitating the sewer system in order to address the existing problems of raw sewage overflows. Based on the sewer system assessment and requirements, the city developed and implemented remedial projects and infrastructure upgrades to address these conditions. The remedial projects were in addition to infrastructure upgrades already underway. The city has also established specific programs designed to ensure proper management, operation and maintenance of its sewer system over the long-term to prevent future sewer overflows. At an estimated cost of $750 million, Columbia has agreed to undertake a thorough assessment of, and implement extensive improvements to its sanitary sewer system. The initiatives for reducing sewer overflows focus on prioritizing issues of human health and the environment. South Carolina: Home to Sea Turtles and Old World Monkeys

South Carolina: Home to Sea Turtles and Old World Monkeys

South Carolina is home to a wide variety of habitat types, including hemlock-blanketed mountains, rolling sand hills, flooded cypress forests, and sunny palmetto-lined beaches.  Another fascination are Sea Islands.  Morgan Island, aka Monkey Island, is an uninhabited island in South Carolina that is home to the only free-ranging colony of Old World monkeys in the United States. There are around 3,500 monkeys on the island.  Though law strictly prohibits people from going onto the island, the monkeys are often seen walking the beaches, sun bathing in the tree-tops, and in the marshes. South Carolina is also home to a noteworthy reptile, namely, the loggerhead sea turtle. This is the most common sea turtle in South Carolina. The nesting season is just beginning and runs from mid-May to mid-August. Nests are typically made between the high tide line and the dune front, on ocean beaches and occasionally on estuarine (where a river meets the sea) shorelines with suitable sand. The average clutch size in South Carolina is 120 eggs, with the average incubation duration of 55 – 60 days.  Loggerheads are named for the size of their head relative to their body. These sea turtles can be found hundreds of miles out to sea or in inshore waters such as bays, lagoons, salt marshes, creeks, ship channels, and the mouths of large rivers. Coral reefs, rocky places, and ship wrecks draw large amounts of marine life and are great feeding areas. Scientists believe that loggerheads are long lived and could live to 50 years or more.
